I found my first rotation as an intern in Emergency Medicine completely overwhelming. I didn’t know who to talk to or how best to help and I found myself unable to anticipate the next things to do. The workflow was unpredictable and I felt I was inconveniencing my bosses by asking them for help. All of this led me to feeling stressed out and anxious every shift and reluctant to come into work at all.
Unfortunately, this experience is not uncommon. Emergency is a chaotic place. It functions completely differently to anywhere else in hospital. It has its own culture, its own workflow and its own rules that are invisible to new players. I created this blog to help demystify things and help you unpack what you experience on shift.
Now, I absolutely love what I do. I hope with a little persistence you discover the satisfaction and reward that Emergency can bring.
